History & Mission

The Family Medicine Foundation of West Virginia was founded on October 7, 1982. It is a charitable foundation, recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization, and thereby, able to receive grants, tax deductible gifts, and contributions. We hope that you will consider the Family Medicine Foundation of West Virginia when memorial gifts, trusts, and tax exempt giving is in your plan for the future.

Each year, the Family Medicine Foundation of West Virginia hosts the Annual Jose I. Ricard, MD Family Medicine & Sports Medicine Conference at the Pullman Plaza Hotel, located in Huntington, West Virginia. This Conference is a fully-accredited continuing medical education conference, dedicated to offering high-quality, practical, clinical medical education to regional health care providers. Also, the Family Medicine Foundation of West Virginia awards both the ESP and Tully Scholarships to medical students who pledge to remain in West Virginia to practice Family Medicine.

It is the mission of the Family Medicine Foundation of West Virginia to enhance health care delivered to the people of West Virginia by:

  1. Supporting the goals and selected projects of the WV Chapter AAFP;
  2. Developing and providing philanthropic resources for the promotion and support of the specialty of Family Practice; and
  3. Bringing together Family Practice organizations to coordinate activities and maximize resources.
